There was a call From Rotary Bangalore South that I have been selected for appearing before a panel of Rotarians in connection with my online application for Rotary Bangalore South scholarship. There were several hundred students like me studying in variouscolleges. The entire hall was buzzing with enthusiastic young college students with equally enthusiastic rotary people. The refreshments and coffee very very tasty. After the formalities, all the candidates were informed that selected students will get a communication. There was no call, no mail , or any sms for nearly three weeks. I thought I might not have been selected for scholarship for not falling in their eligibility criteria. To my surprise on fine day I received a call that I have been selected for Rotary Scholarship Award and I have to attend a function organized for Scholarship distribution on Wednesday the 7.01.2015. at six pm.Accordingly I went to Vasavi Vidyaniketan on the said day. I was late by 15 minutes. I was worried as I had not enquired the room Number in which the scholarship will be distributed. Vasavi vidya Niketan is a very big building spread in four floors with several class rooms. When I reached the place, I got a doubt whether I have come to the right place or mistook the address. There was a registration counter on the right side of the entrance
with two persons dressed immaculate with Rotary Badge. A few yards behind there were snacks and coffee counter. Very melodious music was also adding value to the place. Just I saw the stage and the auditorium. Oh amazing. It was like a filmfare awards or International level awards function which I had seen only in TV. Colourful Stage with a Roatry backdrop signifying the dignity and sanctity. A presidium table with name boards and a podium aptly placed. The lights were very attractive
and sober. The arrangements in the Auditorium was Stunning.Tables with attractive , decorative colour ful frills with five chairs behind each of the table. Tables were numbered. Each table had rose petals in the centre arranged petals after petals and a small candle with mineral water bottles nicely placed at the centre. A gentleman seated ( later I came to know that he is also a donor. ).There were few gentlemen to guide me to the chair and table meant for me. After munching the snacks and sipping coffee, I headed to table. The donor recognized me with my name. all the other students earmarked for their table were already seated. Smiles and greetings
were very affectionate. The entire Auditorium wore a festive look, cheering faces , curious to watch the happenings. The function started as per schedule. Yes, I had heard earlier also that Rotarians are known for keeping up the time. The Chief Guest and office bearers came on to the Dias by 6.59. and the function started exactly at 7.00 pm. One student by name Padma Kini sang an invocation which was meaningful, apt and melodious. Then President Rtn. Sridhar, B.R. welcomed all the
invitees and students. He informed that awarding scholarship is one of the most important event of the club and mentioned one of the biggest program of Rotary Bangalore South . Immediately after that Rtn. Krishna Murthy, Chairman , Scholarship committee, gave a very brief not about the establishment of the Scholarship
Project and commencement of endowments like Rtn. HS Nagaraj and Bangalore South Rotary Trust endowment, BMSCAAT and Bangalore South Rotary Trust endowment and Sharadamma Thambi Chalamaiah and BSRT endowmwnt. He also thanked Rtn Sampath Raman and all the Donors for their generous contribution.
The lighting of the lamp was very unique. All the diginitories on the dias lighted candles kept on their table , at the same time all the candles kept on each of the table of awardees were lit with loud and melodious chanting of Sanskrit Sloka ‘Tamasoma Jyothirgamaya, Mruthyorma amruthngamaya’ in chorus. There was a great vibrative energy created on account of group chanting. In the same tempo, Secretary Rtn. Balaraj read out the oath which was taken by all the scholarship recipients, which made us to commit that we will help the poor and needy by contributing our mite once we start earning. There were more then 100 recipients, we thought it would take a
long time for distribution. To our surprise the cheques pertaining to each of the beneficiary were ready with the concerned donor seated on each table, who handed over to students with a smile and blissful greeting. The entire process took not more than two minutes. Students when called on to the dias for group photograph with a big applause was moment that any one will cherish and will remain green in their memory for along time to come. When chief Guest Shukla bose was introduced by Rtn. Jairaj, Director, all were taken aback, that she left a job of CEO with lucrative perks, only to serve the children poorest of poor. Her address to Students was very inspiring and motivational to excel, to perform, to serve the society and to become honest and proud citizen of the country.
Two students who spoke on behalf of the recipients of awards thanked Rotary Bangalore South for helping their studies since 4 years and informed that they will join Rotary once they begin their career, i was thrilled when they mention they are placed at Mecedese Benz and  HP.
The programme came to an end very meaningfully with Vote of thanks by Rtn.Arun Kumar B.S.Chairman of the Trust and requested everyone to join for the Dinner hostey PDG Udayshankar. The Dinner was really awesome .
Over all It was a best function so well organized that I ever attended.

Kodachadri Trekking – An Exhilarating Experience

A trekking expedition was on my ‘Must Do list for 2015’ and I am glad that I could ‘check off’ the experience from my list in January itself. I have always wanted to trek in the Western Ghats ever since my friend shared her trekking experience last year and grabbed the long Republic Day holiday opportunity to convince President Rtn Sridhar to arrange for a trekking expedition for Rotary families.

Rtn. Madhu came up with the idea of Kodachadri trekking and the homestay at Simha Farms. A group of 32 members including five from Spanadana club left for Kodachadri on 23rd night. 24th January happens to be Rtn Sridhar’s birthday. I decided to fulfill his wishes of celebrating his birthday with Rotarians by baking a cake and co-ordinating with Rtn. Gangadhar so that it would be a surprise for him. The midnight celebration of ‘birthday on wheels’ sure took him by surprise!
Simha farms came as a pleasant surprise with cozy accommodation, great service, tasty Malnad food, organic fruits and greenery interspersed with life-like sculptures carved by the owner Mr. Udaysimha. The visit to Kollur Mookambika temple was a breeze thanks to First Lady of the District Shylaja Manjunath Shetty who arranged for an exclusive darshan for us.

The trekking to Kodachadri breaks all the myths about oneself. Many people including Rtn Sridhar  were not sure if they could make it to the top. The constant motivation and the enthusiasm of the group members ensured a successful trek to the top. I was expecting a pleasant weather all through the trek, thanks to my wild imagination about the hills! Believe me, I laughed it off when the District First Lady told me that it would be very sunny and I should go prepared with a hat and sunscreen. I cursed myself for not heeding to her advice when the scorching sun hit my skin. The forest fire made the trek even more worse but nonetheless all of us made it to the top. The Hidlumane falls on the way offers a breathtaking scenario. I must appreciate the enthusiasm of the Annets during the trek so much so that they were playing football immediately after they returned from the trek!

We had to wait for over an hour to witness the sunset and it was definitely worth the wait. We had our hearts in our hands during the jeep ride back in the night. The undulated roads offered a roller coaster experience and definitely not an enjoyable experience for a weak hearted person like me! President Sridhar and the members in his jeep had a heart-stopping moment when the jeep stopped midway. All’s well that ends well, and we managed to reach the farm with all our body parts intact! The group had plenty of photo-opportunities thanks to the ever-enthusiastic in-house photographer Rtn. Gangadharappa.

Surprisingly, none of us experienced body aches post trekking. This proves that it is the mind that fears the experience more than the body! I believe this experience has ignited the adventurous streak in RBS members. Looking forward to many more treks together in the coming days! - Ann Rekha Sridhar

Vocational Visit to Toyota Kirloskar

A vocational visit to Toyota Kirloskar (TKML), Bidadi was planned for this year. As per the rules at TKML, only 25 persons would be allowed per trip.We reached TKML at 12 noon. After a brief video presentation about the company, we were given a very sumptuous lunch. We were then taken to Toyota Technical Training Centre. The sincerity with which TKML trains their new workshop employees was demonstrated here. Some of the trained employees have won several Gold Medals at international competitions, conducted by Toyota itself.
Every year, as a part of their CSR activities, TKML, selects 64 poor rural students & train them meticulously in all aspects of workshop activities, discipline & good practices to be followed. These students are given free boarding, food, uniform besides the rigorous & systematic training. At the end of the training period, the students are free to either TKML or join any other company.
We were then taken to Plant 2, which is their assembly plant. It is claimed by them that a new car rolls out every 3 minutes, from the Bidadi unit, which when imagined, looks ominous for cities like Bangalore.
All said, it was a great experience for all of us & it was very interactive. Special thanks to Rtn SA Gopalakrishna for getting the slot for 31st Oct, as they are fully booked up to Jan 2015.

Rotarians Have a Ball in Bali!

Selamat Datang – Bali (Welcome to Bali)

Planning a vacation is more fun than the actual vacation itself, don’t you agree? President Sridhar and Vinay must have traveled across so many countries virtually before putting together this plan. The itinerary was planned for a 3 day cruise on Star Libra covering Penang, Phuket and Krabi and 4 night stay at Bali with a transit stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Tour leader Vinay Jairaj led a group 46 members comprising Bali Beauties, Bali Heroes and Bali Babies to a memorable vacation.
The Star Cruise was a rocky experience, literally! While Day 1 on the ship was smooth sailing, the highlight of Day 2 was the Simon Cabaret Show at Phuket on a rainy evening. Day 3 stood still with the Krabi tour getting canceled due to rough weather. Day 4 was a mini city tour at Penang and a transit stay at Kuala Lumpur. Days 5-8 was the Bali tour in which we covered the iconic temples, Kintamani volcano, visit to wood carving and handicraft outlets and water sports at the beach.

  • Food -When you are travel with Rotarians, you will never have to worry about grumbling tummies! Packets of munchies popped out of their bags the minute we were idle. Congress kadlebeeja from Srinivasa Brahmins Bakery, chakli, kodbale with all kinds of thokkus ensured a good exercise for hands and mouths :). Of course, Vinay made sure that we didn’t miss Indian food all through the tour by choosing fabulous restaurants.
  • Oh, the joys of shopping! -  Well, well... Bali Beauties snatched every spare moment to indulge in shopping. While some Bali Heroes happily let their purse strings loose so that they could enjoy their fellowship sessions at peace, dutiful heroes accompanied their spouses and indulged them on a shopping spree.
  • Laughter is the best medicine! - Thanks to the sportive nature of Rotarian families, we had plenty of moments to laugh, tease, gossip and giggle. From Mrs. Vijaya Puttaraju and Rtn Ramakrishna’s laughing competition to RtnDwaraknath’s funny one-liners, singing and dancing sessions @ cruise to Rtn Ramesh’s poetry sessions, the vacation entertainment was FULL ON!
  • Babies’ Day Out! – Bali Babies had their own chill-out sessions. While the boys group enjoyed at the pool and their own games, the girls were busy shopping and clicking selfies so much so that we started calling them ‘The Selfie Girls’!
  • RBS Rocks! – From participating in competitions to cheering aloud during the cruise shows, sharing chakli, kodbale at the airport queues to hardcore bargaining moments, the group grabbed the eyeballs of fellow travelers wherever they went.
  • Tour Highlights: Rtn Satish, Mr and MrsPuttaraju, Mr and Mrs Ramesh Babu, Rtn SN Ramesh, Ann Rekha Sridhar being a part of the cruise shows, experiencing sea sickness on the cruise, exclusive puja opportunity at the Rudra temple at Uluwatu Temple,Balinese cultural show, all Bali beauties wearing white @ cruise and red @ Bali, disappointed faces when we were taken to the wrong shopping mall, thrilled faces when we stole a bargain, and the joy of eating pani puri, pav bhaji and kulfi @ Bali beach!
  • Tour Guides: Sally @ Penang, Julie @ Phuket, NarendraModi – Jnr(yes! that’s what he called himself) @ Malaysia, Bhagus @ Bali –these guides ensured that there was not a dull moment during the entire tour.
  • All’s well that ends well! – I’ll conclude by saying that going on a group vacation is a different ball game altogether. Such experiences give us a chance to understand each other, teach us to be accommodative, go with the flow and bond over common interests. Hats off to Annette Vinay Jairaj of Aviation Holidays for going an extra mile and ensuring us a great vacation.
Selamat Jalan!(Goodbye in Balinese)                                                                                                                                                  - Ann Rekha Sridhar
