Presidents Message -Sept 2017

Greetings to all the members and readers.

Important Religious and National Festivals are being celebrated with all the enthusiasm and  fervor.. Lina joins me in wishing you all a very happy Navarathri.
It is 62 days since My team took the mantle of this Club. Progress gives us happiness , but not the contentment. Lot more to be done in the next few weeks.
GST has set a not so happy mood in the business class, Hence mobilisation of funds for service activities have become all the more difficult.
A big silver line is that major projects are taking shape.
*. Inauguration of Sompura School building,  a significant project taken up in the previous Rotary Year with the help of Sabic is a great service to the community in the filed of Rural Primary  Education.the construction and design was succesful in attracting appreciation from the Partners of the Project and Govt Officials as well as Political leaders.
*.Immediate plan on our drawing board is Mega Scholarship event. Applications started poring in online. The Scholarship Committee and students are eagerly awaiting for 25th October 2017 to witness the event.
*. It is contemplated to bring out our RBS Roaster for the year 2017-18., we seek the co operation of all the members in providing the latest photographs and updated details regarding their Profession, Address, and family .*
. It is with very immense pleasure, I state that our Project  ( approx Rs.  39 Lakhs ) for putting up100 comfort Stations in and around Santhekallahalli is going on in full swing and likely to be completed before the end of this calendar year.
* Necessary approvals for construction of New buildings of Five govt Primary Schools  are in the pipeline. ( Project Cost approx Rs. 150 lakhs )
*. A project under Matching Grant to provide Dialyses Medical equipment at  an approximate cost of 36 lakhs is almost through, waiting for the formal approval.
Most heartening news is that Rtn. T. Srinivas,  Secretary, RBS has announced a Matching contribution of Rs. 3 lakhs towards Scholarship in addition to the contribution made by him to the Thambhi chalamaiah Setty Shardamma Endowment  for Scholarship.
*. Our team is working out detailed plans to organise ROTO UTSAV  2017 in a big manner.
Look forward for total support from each one of you in serving the community in a still better way.
Yours in rotary,

A NEW BENCH MARK IN COMMUNITY SERVICE

Rotary Bangalore South and Parimala Hospital, in association with Cancer Care India, Swaasathya Health Foundation,Suman Health Careand Need Need Foundation were involved in the conduct of the two largest Cervical Cancer Screening Camps, and the second one went on to break the existing Guinness World Record in Cervical Cancer Screening and created a new World Record.

THE FIRST CAMP – SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR!
The first camp was held at Rajarajeshwari School, Yeshwantpur on May 31st 2015.  It was inaugurated by the District Governor Shri Manjunath Shetty.  520 patients were screened on this day with the involvement of about 20 Gynecologists and 40 Paramedics. The camp ended abruptly due to heavy rains while we were in striking distance of overtaking the world record of 701 patients done previously by Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai. The PAP smears of all the participants have been sent for examination to Kidwai Institute of Oncology and we are awaiting the reports soon.

THE SECOND CAMP – CREATES HISTORY
Undeterred and determined to achieve the world record target, a second attempt was made on 21st June this time at GK High School, Doddaballapura.  The camp was inaugurated by the Local MLA Shri Venkataramiaha and this time we achieved the target of 701 participants at 5.15 pm which was greeted by thunderous applause by all the assembled people at the venue.  History was created when the 702th participant was recorded and a new World Record was thus established.  The camp concluded at 6 pm with a tally of 731 participants, which is now the new World Record in Cervical Cancer Screening.  There was plenty of jubilation among the participants and the organizers.  Interestingly the second attempt required only half the number of doctors and paramedics from the first effort.

With this Parimala Hospital and Rotary Bangalore South has created a unique distinction of screening a whopping number of 1251 patients in 2 camps.  Though the first camp took 3 months to organize but the second one just took 20 days!!  This is a record of sorts and is unprecedented in the history of any Cancer Camps in the world.  A new benchmark in Community services has thus been established.  Out of the 731 patients screened on 21st June, there was one frank case of Cancer Cervix and 4 suspicious cases which were advised biopsy.  All the smears have been sent to Kidwai for reporting and the reports should be available within 3-4 weeks.

The camp thus was a huge success and has entered into the pages of history with a world record title.  The details of the attempt have been sent to the Guinness World Record Authorities for their verification and acknowledgment of our efforts in creating a new World Record in Cervical Cancer Screening.

Why these camps?
The purpose of these camps was not to create a World Record but was to create a massive awareness among the general public about the number one killer of Women in our country, the Cancer Cervix.  It has been reported that every 8 minutes one of our country women is succumbing to this cancer.  But the silver lining is that if this cancer is detected early by way of a simple PAP Smear Test, then the disease can be completely cured by proper timely intervention thereby preventing the women mortalities due to this cancer.  Ignorance is the hurdle for women getting this simple test done.  As a social responsibility in creating a mass awareness among our women, these camps were organized and with the creating of the World Record we are hugely successful in our efforts of creating a mass awareness among our women folks.

We thank all the doctors, organizations, participants, paramedics, and local people who made this endeavor of ours a grand success.  We hope to organize many more camps like this in future to eliminate this Cancer afflicting our women population and create a healthy society with healthy women who are the backbone of our families and nation.

This is the first time that a Rotary Bangalore South has made an attempt to enter into the Guinness World Record and we all are very proud and happy at this historic achievement.

* Another solution she suggested was going back to our childhood or bring back the child in oneself. These efforts will bring happiness and relive from stress. Children wil not have any stress.
*Never allow some one to control your life.
* Whenever your inner soul changes, your outside world also change.

Kodachadri Trekking – An Exhilarating Experience

A trekking expedition was on my ‘Must Do list for 2015’ and I am glad that I could ‘check off’ the experience from my list in January itself. I have always wanted to trek in the Western Ghats ever since my friend shared her trekking experience last year and grabbed the long Republic Day holiday opportunity to convince President Rtn Sridhar to arrange for a trekking expedition for Rotary families.

Rtn. Madhu came up with the idea of Kodachadri trekking and the homestay at Simha Farms. A group of 32 members including five from Spanadana club left for Kodachadri on 23rd night. 24th January happens to be Rtn Sridhar’s birthday. I decided to fulfill his wishes of celebrating his birthday with Rotarians by baking a cake and co-ordinating with Rtn. Gangadhar so that it would be a surprise for him. The midnight celebration of ‘birthday on wheels’ sure took him by surprise!
Simha farms came as a pleasant surprise with cozy accommodation, great service, tasty Malnad food, organic fruits and greenery interspersed with life-like sculptures carved by the owner Mr. Udaysimha. The visit to Kollur Mookambika temple was a breeze thanks to First Lady of the District Shylaja Manjunath Shetty who arranged for an exclusive darshan for us.

The trekking to Kodachadri breaks all the myths about oneself. Many people including Rtn Sridhar  were not sure if they could make it to the top. The constant motivation and the enthusiasm of the group members ensured a successful trek to the top. I was expecting a pleasant weather all through the trek, thanks to my wild imagination about the hills! Believe me, I laughed it off when the District First Lady told me that it would be very sunny and I should go prepared with a hat and sunscreen. I cursed myself for not heeding to her advice when the scorching sun hit my skin. The forest fire made the trek even more worse but nonetheless all of us made it to the top. The Hidlumane falls on the way offers a breathtaking scenario. I must appreciate the enthusiasm of the Annets during the trek so much so that they were playing football immediately after they returned from the trek!

We had to wait for over an hour to witness the sunset and it was definitely worth the wait. We had our hearts in our hands during the jeep ride back in the night. The undulated roads offered a roller coaster experience and definitely not an enjoyable experience for a weak hearted person like me! President Sridhar and the members in his jeep had a heart-stopping moment when the jeep stopped midway. All’s well that ends well, and we managed to reach the farm with all our body parts intact! The group had plenty of photo-opportunities thanks to the ever-enthusiastic in-house photographer Rtn. Gangadharappa.

Surprisingly, none of us experienced body aches post trekking. This proves that it is the mind that fears the experience more than the body! I believe this experience has ignited the adventurous streak in RBS members. Looking forward to many more treks together in the coming days! - Ann Rekha Sridhar

There was a call From Rotary Bangalore South that I have been selected for appearing before a panel of Rotarians in connection with my online application for Rotary Bangalore South scholarship. There were several hundred students like me studying in variouscolleges. The entire hall was buzzing with enthusiastic young college students with equally enthusiastic rotary people. The refreshments and coffee very very tasty. After the formalities, all the candidates were informed that selected students will get a communication. There was no call, no mail , or any sms for nearly three weeks. I thought I might not have been selected for scholarship for not falling in their eligibility criteria. To my surprise on fine day I received a call that I have been selected for Rotary Scholarship Award and I have to attend a function organized for Scholarship distribution on Wednesday the 7.01.2015. at six pm.Accordingly I went to Vasavi Vidyaniketan on the said day. I was late by 15 minutes. I was worried as I had not enquired the room Number in which the scholarship will be distributed. Vasavi vidya Niketan is a very big building spread in four floors with several class rooms. When I reached the place, I got a doubt whether I have come to the right place or mistook the address. There was a registration counter on the right side of the entrance
with two persons dressed immaculate with Rotary Badge. A few yards behind there were snacks and coffee counter. Very melodious music was also adding value to the place. Just I saw the stage and the auditorium. Oh amazing. It was like a filmfare awards or International level awards function which I had seen only in TV. Colourful Stage with a Roatry backdrop signifying the dignity and sanctity. A presidium table with name boards and a podium aptly placed. The lights were very attractive
and sober. The arrangements in the Auditorium was Stunning.Tables with attractive , decorative colour ful frills with five chairs behind each of the table. Tables were numbered. Each table had rose petals in the centre arranged petals after petals and a small candle with mineral water bottles nicely placed at the centre. A gentleman seated ( later I came to know that he is also a donor. ).There were few gentlemen to guide me to the chair and table meant for me. After munching the snacks and sipping coffee, I headed to table. The donor recognized me with my name. all the other students earmarked for their table were already seated. Smiles and greetings
were very affectionate. The entire Auditorium wore a festive look, cheering faces , curious to watch the happenings. The function started as per schedule. Yes, I had heard earlier also that Rotarians are known for keeping up the time. The Chief Guest and office bearers came on to the Dias by 6.59. and the function started exactly at 7.00 pm. One student by name Padma Kini sang an invocation which was meaningful, apt and melodious. Then President Rtn. Sridhar, B.R. welcomed all the
invitees and students. He informed that awarding scholarship is one of the most important event of the club and mentioned one of the biggest program of Rotary Bangalore South . Immediately after that Rtn. Krishna Murthy, Chairman , Scholarship committee, gave a very brief not about the establishment of the Scholarship
Project and commencement of endowments like Rtn. HS Nagaraj and Bangalore South Rotary Trust endowment, BMSCAAT and Bangalore South Rotary Trust endowment and Sharadamma Thambi Chalamaiah and BSRT endowmwnt. He also thanked Rtn Sampath Raman and all the Donors for their generous contribution.
The lighting of the lamp was very unique. All the diginitories on the dias lighted candles kept on their table , at the same time all the candles kept on each of the table of awardees were lit with loud and melodious chanting of Sanskrit Sloka ‘Tamasoma Jyothirgamaya, Mruthyorma amruthngamaya’ in chorus. There was a great vibrative energy created on account of group chanting. In the same tempo, Secretary Rtn. Balaraj read out the oath which was taken by all the scholarship recipients, which made us to commit that we will help the poor and needy by contributing our mite once we start earning. There were more then 100 recipients, we thought it would take a
long time for distribution. To our surprise the cheques pertaining to each of the beneficiary were ready with the concerned donor seated on each table, who handed over to students with a smile and blissful greeting. The entire process took not more than two minutes. Students when called on to the dias for group photograph with a big applause was moment that any one will cherish and will remain green in their memory for along time to come. When chief Guest Shukla bose was introduced by Rtn. Jairaj, Director, all were taken aback, that she left a job of CEO with lucrative perks, only to serve the children poorest of poor. Her address to Students was very inspiring and motivational to excel, to perform, to serve the society and to become honest and proud citizen of the country.
Two students who spoke on behalf of the recipients of awards thanked Rotary Bangalore South for helping their studies since 4 years and informed that they will join Rotary once they begin their career, i was thrilled when they mention they are placed at Mecedese Benz and  HP.
The programme came to an end very meaningfully with Vote of thanks by Rtn.Arun Kumar B.S.Chairman of the Trust and requested everyone to join for the Dinner hostey PDG Udayshankar. The Dinner was really awesome .
Over all It was a best function so well organized that I ever attended.

Talk on Myths & Facts of Epilepsy

Dr. H.V. Srinivas who has decades of rich experience in treating and teaching Epilepsy was invited to speak to on the myths and facts of Epilepsy. The Myths and facts that he revealed were very interesting.  Members who attended the meeting were amazed to know that Greek Philosopher Socrates and his followers believed that this disease is a very sacred one and gifted by God. Contrary to to this, Indians believed that it is a curse and strongly believed that, it is a dreaded disease which cannot be cured. Some even had a belief that it is courageous and such patients should not be touched by naked hand.

Normally the causes for fits or epilepsy are lack of sleep and total fasting. Whenever a person gets fits, commonly observed is that he will be given a bunch of keys, or bring a foul smelling footwear near his nose. There were also instances of putting a burn mark on his body. Dr. Srinivas suggested nothing to be put his hands or mouth, it stops on its own and suggested that people around the patient should not panic. He also mentioned that it is possible to cure epilepsy with two to three years of treatment.

Climate Change and it's effect on Water Resource Management

Dr. Ramaraju gave an interesting talk on climate change and and its effect on water resources in the world on 17th September 2014. Though the subject appears to be connected with civic science, our Rotarians  were given  understand that the subject has a direct relevance to our every day life. Dr. Ramaraju said , as per a scientific estimate, if rainfall  is stored properly, it will meet the water needs of the entire population in Bangalore city for one full year.
Improper rainfall, though a natural phenomenon, contribution of humans towards air pollution, global warming, deforestation, growth of industries at the cost of environment pollution also plays a role in climate changes. The evil effects of these changes are volcanoes, tsunami, drought, floods untimely rainfall, variations in monsoon etc. Theses devastative effects can be prevented.
Dr. Ramaraju also said all these can be prevented provided the society and Government authorities have will to combat and implement proper strategies. Like rain water harvesting, removing silt from catchment area, stopping deforestation, intensification of water saving campaign, implementing water wastewater management and taking steps to popularize the green revolution and mass education helps change the situation.
Several members came forward to purchase ROTARY Wrist Watch as the token of their commitment to Rotary community service.

BY RESTRICTING MOBILITY DO NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS TO MAKE YOU WALK.  LET US JOIN TO FIGHT THIS INCAPACITATING DISEASE CALLED ARTHRITIS”. It is regarded as one of the ten leading diseases in the world and would become a major global problem in the years to come. Asian race is more prone to this problem and it is estimated  that more than 70 % of Indians above 60 years are suffering from this disability.
Dr. John sai,  Rotary organization which helped in eradicating polio should join hands with orthopedicians to combat this incapacitating menace.  Dr. John also spoke  about the “Save the Knee campaign” spearheaded by him in his various organizations and briefed about the program on Sunday 9th June 2013 arranged by the Rotary Bangalore South club at the Sabic-Rotary Multipurpose Community Hall at B. to all the places she has visited in the world. “Indians are very intelligent!”, she remarked.

Ms. Sandhya S. N - Head, Bengaluru Chapter of  Dignity foundation was the speaker on 13th March which was to mark the International Women’s day at our Club. Previously, she headed the Bangalore chapter of  Help Age India for nearly two decades. At present she is with the Dignity foundation which works for improving the life of senior citizens.

Rtn.Dr.Indira Jai Prakash

The guest was introduced by Rtn. Indira Jai Prakash, who gave the information about the UN theme for this year’s INWD as  “Promises are Promises, let us end violence towards Women” and  requested Rotary to consider this initiative as its goal too.

Ms. Sandhya S. N - Head, Bengaluru Chapter of  Dignity Foundation

Ms. Sandhya spoke of how men and women have to work together for progress. Now women have entered every profession and  have showed their charisma even in NASA. No one can say women are left behind. She gave the example of how Mrs. Sudha Murthy, the lady behind the success of Mr. Narayanamurthy of Infosys, fought with the prejudiced policies of Tata’s and thus opened the door for women to enter into new areas of work. She briefed about her work at Dignity and the difference it is making to the lives of many seniors. She also agreed to share the list of resource persons that dignity has for Rotary programs.

Rtn. Meenakshi,

Vote of thanks was proposed by Rtn. Meenakshi, who quoted the proverb-“ A woman is like a teabag. She may  appear frail and weak. But when a teabag is put in hot water, it releases its strong aroma. Likewise, a woman when facing troubles shows her true nature and strength”.  She also thanked President Rtn.Gopalakrishna, for the nice gesture of sending bouquets to all the lady Rotarians of our club on the occasion of Women’s day.

The Students of  8th Standard at remote Govt.Schools around Mulbagal were  anxiously waiting to receive a copy of Bharadwaj  English Kannada Dictionary, most of whose was a ‘first time’ to become the proud owner of such a big Book. Rotary Bangalore South in association with Rotary Club of Mulbagal, distributed Dictionaries to these privileged students on Saturday 9th March, 2013, this project was conceived by cyclathon team of RI Dist 3190.

Our President Rtn. M.V.Gopalakrishna , Rtn. P.C.Balaraj, Rtn. B.R.Sridhar, Rtn.S.R.Prakash were accompanied by Rotary President Elect Mulbagal. Rtn. Prabhakar Gupta and Assistant DG  Rtn. Ravindranath.  Our team had the satisfaction of having helped 600 students with these dictionaries – a Dream project of our Late.DG Rtn.Pandurang Potnis which is ongoing in the dist with full swing. It was a heart touching experience when students were expressing their gratefulness through their innocent eyes. We thank Interact school of JSS, Rtn. Alain and Rtn. Isabelle from France and all the Rotarians of our club who have contributed for these Dictionaries.

The schools benefitted by these books were Nangli, Emmenatha, Thippedodi, Kolar, Kaganahalli, Musthur and Hebani. Looking at the pathetic condition of these schools with eroded flooring and no benches to sit, our Rtn.B.R.Sridhar announced that the necessary infrastructure  shall be provided with the help of Rotary Bangalore South. The local authorities, Students, Teachers  and School Administrators were extremely happy at the spontaneous decision taken to help the deserving.
